A graduate of Tsinghua University's Department of Electronic Engineering, Zhang Dajiang entered the power electronics industry immediately after graduation. Starting as a switch-mode power supply designer and later transitioning to a field application engineer (FAE), he shifted his focus to product development and definition in 2013. Over his 18-year career in semiconductor power devices, Zhang has accumulated extensive hands-on experience. As his role evolved, he began prioritizing customer-centric approaches, analyzing challenges from a market perspective. He emphasizes that product definition must transcend theoretical exercises—it requires understanding real-world application scenarios, identifying customer pain points, and designing solutions that truly meet market demands.

For Zhang, product definition and R&D are inseparable. Since joining GaNext in 2021, he has maintained close collaboration with the R&D team to ensure products meet both customer needs and technical specifications while staying competitive. GaNext's core offerings include the GaNFusion Power IC, speed-controllable GaN switches, and bidirectional GaN FETs. Innovation lies at the heart of the company's product philosophy. For example, the GaNFusion Power IC GN771x series employs lossless current sampling technology, reducing energy loss from traditional sampling resistors and significantly improving efficiency. Additionally, optimizations in turn-on/turn-off speeds for flyback circuits minimize voltage stress on the secondary side while enhancing EMI performance. “Balancing efficiency and EMI in switch-mode power supplies is challenging, but the GaNFusion series achieves both,” Zhang explains.

Under his leadership, GaNext has built a robust patent matrix, filing nearly 100 patents to safeguard innovations. During the patent application process, his team meticulously analyzed circuit functionalities and validated technical combinations to ensure comprehensive protection, preventing competitors from circumventing GaNext's proprietary solutions.

Since its founding in 2020, GaNext has developed a diverse range of products, including PD fast-charging adapters, PC power supplies, automotive bidirectional DC-DC converters, LED drivers, and battery formation systems. Looking ahead, Zhang emphasizes GaNext's dual strategy: advancing cutting-edge technologies while delivering cost-effective mass-market products. “High-end innovations set our technical benchmarks, but affordability ensures market share,” he states. While GaNext's GaN products already rank among the industry's best, Zhang believes continuous engagement in consumer markets and precise customer insights are vital for maintaining competitiveness.

Reflecting on his journey, Zhang credits Tsinghua University for his success. “I love my work—it fills me with pride and purpose. Without Tsinghua's rigorous education, I couldn't have thrived in this field,” he says. Twenty-two years ago, Zhang left a small village in Chongqing's Wanzhou District and embarked on a 1,000-kilometer journey to Tsinghua. That leap marked not only a geographical shift but the start of a transformative chapter in his life.
