According to CINNO Research statistics, the combined revenue of the Top 10 global semiconductor equipment manufacturers reached $52.2 billion in 1H'23, with a year-on-year growth of 8% but a sequential decrease of 6%.

In comparison to the Top 10 equipment manufacturers of 2022, Teradyne dropped out of the rankings, and Disco replaced it, taking the tenth spot.

Dutch company ASML secured the top position in the 1H'23 market with revenue surpassing $14.8 billion, surpassing the US company Applied Materials (AMAT), which ranked second with revenue of approximately $12.4 billion. Tokyo Electron (TEL) from Japan took the third spot, overtaking Lam Research, an American company. Lam Research and KLA Corporation ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

In terms of revenue, the combined revenue of the top five equipment manufacturers in 1H'23 has already exceeded $45.7 billion, accounting for 87% of the total revenue of the Top 10.

Top 1 ASML - Netherlands

ASML, the largest semiconductor lithography equipment supplier in the world, is also the only company capable of providing EUV lithography machines for advanced processes of 7nm and below. On July 19th, ASML released its financial report for the second quarter of 2023. According to the company's performance, the net sales for Q2 2023 reached 6.9 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 27% and a quarter-on-quarter increase of 2%, approaching the upper limit of the previously given guidance (6.5 to 7 billion euros). This was mainly due to higher-than-expected additional immersion DUV revenue in this quarter. In terms of revenue by equipment type, the revenue share from ArFi equipment (immersion DUV lithography equipment) accounted for 49% in Q2, with a quarter-on-quarter increase of 19%; while the revenue share from EUV equipment accounted for 37%, with a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 17%. As for sales volume by equipment type, ASML sold 12 EUV machines in Q2 (a decrease of 5 compared to the previous quarter), and 39 ArFi machines (an increase of 14 compared to the previous quarter), showing significant improvement. In terms of revenue by region, sales revenue from China*accounted for 34%, with a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 15%; sales revenue from mainland China accounted for 24%, with a quarter-on-quarter increase of 16%; and sales revenue from the United States accounted for 10%, with a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 5%. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 increased by 54.7% year-on-year. In 2022, ASML's revenue growth was delayed until 2023 due to fast shipment, as customers needed to complete factory verification to confirm revenue. ASML recently confirmed that it can export advanced immersion DUV equipment, including TWINSCANNXT:2000i and more advanced models, to mainland China customers before the end of 2023. However, EUV equipment is still on the export control list. From 2024, it will become more difficult to obtain export licenses for the aforementioned advanced equipment.

Top 2 Applied Materials (AMAT) - United States

Applied Materials is the world's largest semiconductor equipment supplier and known as the "supermarket" of semiconductor equipment, covering almost the entire semiconductor manufacturing process. Its semiconductor products include equipment for thin film deposition (CVD, PVD, etc.), ion implantation, etching, rapid thermal processing, chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), and measurement and inspection. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 increased by 5.4% year-on-year. In August of this year, Applied Materials announced its quarterly results for the period ending July 30, 2023. The report showed that the company's revenue for the previous quarter was $6.43 billion, a decrease of 1% compared to the same period last year, with an operating profit of $1.80 billion. According to Yu Dinglu,*of Applied Materials China Taiwan, the semiconductor industry is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2030. However, the industry is facing five major challenges, including increased manufacturing complexity, rising costs, accelerated R&D and production pace, carbon emissions, and talent shortage.

Top 3 Tokyo Electron (TEL) - Japan

Tokyo Electron is Japan's largest semiconductor equipment supplier, specializing in semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing equipment. Its semiconductor products include photoresist coating equipment, thermal processing equipment, dry etching equipment, chemical vapor deposition equipment, wet cleaning equipment, and testing equipment. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 decreased by 9.0% year-on-year.

Top 4 Lam Research (LAM) - United States

Lam Research, also known as Lam, focuses on manufacturing etching equipment, thin film deposition equipment, and cleaning equipment for semiconductor manufacturing. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 decreased by 18.6% year-on-year. Lam announced its financial report for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2023 (ending June 25, 2023): quarterly revenue decreased by 17% to $3.21 billion, and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share decreased by 14% to $5.98. Lam's research pointed out that in the fourth quarter, mainland China, China Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia accounted for 26%, 20%, 24%, 10%, 8%, 8%, and 4% of the quarterly revenue, respectively.

Top 5 KLA Corporation (KLA) - United States

KLA Corporation is a leading company in semiconductor process measurement and inspection equipment. Its semiconductor products include defect detection, film thickness measurement, CD measurement, alignment accuracy measurement, and other inspection equipment. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 decreased by 1.5% year-on-year. KLA Corporation announced its financial report for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2023 (ending June 30, 2023): annual revenue decreased by 5% (quarterly decrease of 3%) to $2.355 billion, and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share decreased by 7.1% (quarterly decrease of 1.6%) to $5.40. KLA Corporation also pointed out that the semiconductor industry has become more strategic and diversified due to new enabling technologies such as generative artificial intelligence, 5G, IoT, automotive electronics, and advanced packaging.

Top 6 ASM International (ASMI) - Netherlands

ASM International mainly focuses on deposition equipment for the front-end processes of semiconductor manufacturing, including thin film deposition and diffusion oxidation equipment. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 increased by 29.5% year-on-year.

Top 7 Advantest - Japan

Advantest's main business includes semiconductor testing and integrated system testing for mechanical and electronic systems, as well as related equipment. Its semiconductor products include back-end testing machines and sorting machines. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 increased by 2.0% year-on-year. In the April to June quarter, Advantest's operating profit decreased by 68% to 14.3 billion yen (approximately $101.8 million), highlighting the weakness in the smartphone market and the slowdown in data center investments. However, a recovery is expected next year. Advantest CEO Yoshiaki Yoshida stated at the financial results briefing, "Although there was a decline this year, I believe we will eventually face a growth curve."

Screen's main business includes manufacturing equipment for semiconductors, flat panel displays, and printed circuit boards. Its semiconductor products include etching, photoresist development, and cleaning equipment. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 increased by 0.9% year-on-year.

Top 9 Hitachi High-Tech - Japan

Hitachi High-Tech's main businesses include semiconductor equipment, electron microscopes, FPD equipment, and medical analysis equipment. Its semiconductor products include deposition, etching, and inspection equipment, as well as packaging and bonding equipment. The semiconductor business revenue for 1H'23 is estimated to decrease by 0.7% year-on-year.
